If you’d told me six months ago that I’d be obsessing over a tile game with ancient Chinese roots, I’m not sure I would have believed you. But here we are, and now it’s time for me to convince you!
So, What Is Mahjong?
Mahjong is a strategy-based tile game that originated in China during the Qing Dynasty and has been bringing people together around tables for centuries. It’s played with 144 tiles and is typically a four-player game where you’re drawing and discarding tiles to build winning combinations. Think of it like a mix of rummy and chess, part strategy, part memory, part luck. It can sound confusing but that’s where the Mahjong 101 lessons come in.
Why Is Everyone Suddenly Playing Mahjong?
Mahjong has recently started to become quite the popular game, and honestly, it makes total sense. Social media has introduced a whole new generation to the game, and it’s become the ultimate girls’ night activity. It’s the kind of game that slows you down, gets you off your phone, and has you actually connecting with the people sitting across from you.
It’s also genuinely good for your brain; mahjong is known to sharpen memory, focus, and critical thinking. Fun and good for you? Again, this is me convincing you to start!
My “Why Didn’t I Do This Sooner?” Moment
A few months ago, I sat down for my very first Mahjong 101 class with the incredibly talented Natalie Dawkins, and I was hooked from round one. I walked in not knowing a single thing and walked out convinced that this isn’t just a fad. It was such a good reminder that it is never too late to try something new.
So, that’s exactly why I’m excited to be giving away a Mahjong game set, tote bag, and a Mahjong 101 lesson for a table of four with Natalie herself. Trust me, you’ll end up loving it. (Giveaway ends May 11th – however, if you are seeing this after, look up Mahjong 101 in your local area, and I’m sure you can find a way to get involved!)
