Guide to the 4th of July in Coastal NC!

There’s nowhere I’d rather spend the 4th of July than right here on the North Carolina coast – and I might be biased, but I don’t think I’m wrong. Between the small-town parades, fireworks over the water, and long beach days, this corner of the coast does Independence Day like nowhere else.

And this year is extra special: 2026 marks America’s 250th birthday, so our local celebrations are pulling out all the stops. Whether you’re a local, a longtime visitor, or planning your very first trip to the area, here’s how to make the most of the holiday.

The Big Celebrations

The NC 4th of July Festival – Southport (June 26–July 4)

Southport isn’t just hosting a 4th of July festival – it’s home to North Carolina’s official Independence Day celebration, a tradition more than 220 years in the making. This year’s festival runs a full nine days across Southport and Oak Island, with the grand parade, a flotilla of patriotic boats on the Cape Fear River, live music, a waterfront arts and crafts market, kids’ activities, and even the World’s Largest Ice Cream Sundae courtesy of the Southport Fire Department. It all wraps up on July 4th with the iconic fireworks display over the water. If you’ve never experienced Southport on the 4th, put it on your list – around 50,000 people make the trip every year, and once you’re there, you’ll understand why.

Boardwalk Blast – Carolina Beach (Friday, July 3)

Carolina Beach’s beloved summer fireworks series gets a special holiday edition this year on Friday, July 3rd. Live music kicks off at the Boardwalk Gazebo Stage in the evening, with fireworks lighting up the sky over the ocean at 9 PM. Bring your chairs and blankets and claim a spot on the beach strand right in front of the boardwalk – it’s free, it’s festive, and it’s the perfect way to start your holiday weekend.

Wilmington’s 4th of July Celebration – Downtown Riverfront (Saturday, July 4)

For a classic city celebration, head to Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington. The evening features a free concert by the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, followed by a spectacular fireworks display launched from a barge on the Cape Fear River near the Battleship North Carolina. The best part? The fireworks are visible all along the nearly two-mile Riverwalk, so make a day of it – shop and dine in the historic district, then find your spot along the water as the sun goes down.

Make a Whole Day (or Week) of It

Here’s how to fill the rest of your holiday:

Spend the day on the sand. It wouldn’t be a coastal 4th without a beach day. Pack the cooler, stake your umbrella, and settle in – whether you’re on Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Holden Beach, or one of the Wilmington-area beaches.

Get out on the water. One of my favorite ways to celebrate is from a boat – cruising the Intracoastal Waterway with friends, anchoring near a sandbar, or catching the sunset before the fireworks begin. Local rental companies make it easy even if you don’t own a boat:

End the day with a scoop. No summer day here is complete without ice cream, and we’re spoiled for choice:

• Ocean Isle Beach: Ocean Isle Creamery (get a scoop on a fresh waffle cone and enjoy it on the wraparound porch), Spilt Milk for hot donuts, gelato, and milkshakes, or Sunset Slush for classic Italian ice
• Sunset Beach: MooTown, a family-friendly local favorite near the waterway with more than 30 flavors and house-made waffle cones
